The tightness or accuracy of the pencil depends on the required exactness of the subject matter. The 2nd phase is a monochromatic underpainting to help establish values. Next step involves blocking in color. As my great high school art teacher, Mrs. Brentlinger, taught us, "Say something to the whole piece before getting bogged down in specific details." In other words, I establish colors and tone over the whole piece, instead of, say, just doing detail on the deer before moving on. 4th and final stage is building up the details and refining shapes - typically light on dark as with traditional oil painting. The last image (detail) is a portion of the art at 100%. All stages done in Adobe Photoshop (I use minimal layers) with a Wacom Intuos Pro tablet and pen. Mouse over image to pause transitions.
